Airport
in Barbados
"What Is The Name Of The Airport In Barbados?"
There is only one airport in Barbados.
This
airport is located on the southern most tip of the island at Seawell,
Christ Church.
So what is the name of the airport in
Barbados? The Grantley Adams International Airport,
named in honour of Sir Grantley Herbert Adams, the first premier of
Barbados.
In the 1930s this airport’s runway was
just
a grass strip!
However the Barbados airport has come
a long
way since then and has undergone a recent $100 million USD renovation
and expansion.
Now with one 3,353 metre asphalt
runway,
this airport services all arrivals to and departures from the island
and serves as a main transfer hub for the Eastern Caribbean.

Arriving at The Airport in Barbados
As flights approach Barbados for
landing,
they generally fly along the west coast of the island over the
Caribbean Sea. This gives passengers, seated on the left side of the
airplane during arrivals, a great view of this pristine coast.
Flights leaving the island generally
fly up
the east coast of the island over the Atlantic Ocean. This gives
passengers, seated on the left side of the airplane during departures,
a great view of the island’s beautiful east coast.
It would therefore be a great idea to
request a window seat on the left side of the plane when booking your Barbados
flights .
Upon arriving at the airport in
Barbados you
must disembark the aircraft and walk from the plane through one of the
5 taxi aprons into the arrivals terminal.
For those of you who are Club
Caribbean members , VIP Arrival Service is available to
eliminate long queues.
In the baggage claims area of the
arrivals
terminal there is a Duty Free Shop offering a wide range of liquor,
wine, tobacco and perfumes. These items can be preordered and collected
upon arrival.
Once you go through Barbados
immigration and Barbados
customs you are allowed to exit the airport. There are
numerous taxis at the exit of the arrivals terminal ready to take
arriving visitors to their accommodations. These Barbados taxis do not
have meters and work on a fixed fare. You should therefore agree upon a
reasonable price before taking one.
If you have arranged to pick up a
rental car
at the airport, there are numerous Barbados car rental booths located
directly to the left of this exit. Just look for your rental company’s
booth.
On the other hand, if you have decided
to
take a Barbados
airport transfer to your hotel you will meet with the company
representative outside of the arrivals terminal, who will be holding a
sign to identify themselves. They will then direct you to your shuttle
bus.
The airport in Barbados is
conveniently
located at the southern end of the ABC Highway and allows for easy and
direct access to all major regions of the island by car.
If you are waiting to be picked up by
a
friend or relative, the airport car park is directly adjacent to the
arrivals terminal. Persons collecting passengers are allowed to wait
for arriving passengers directly outside the terminal exit and should
therefore be the first faces you see as you exit the arrivals terminal.
Departing The Airport in Barbados
Upon leaving Barbados departing
passengers
are dropped off directly infront of the open air check-in area.
Here various airline check-in counters
are
located side by side. Just find your counter and join the queue.
Remember to have your $30 USD ($60
BDS)
departure tax which must be paid at check-in by all passengers.
If you are hungry there are various
restaurants and food stands outside the airport as well as inside the
departures lounge.
Once you have finished check-in you
will be
allowed to enter the departures lounge after going through security.
Here you will have your last opportunity to purchase any Barbados gifts
and souvenirs for friends and family.
For those executive travelers, The
Club Caribbean Executive Lounge and Business Centre is
located on the mezzanine floor of the Barbados airport. This executive
lounge offers internet access, fax services and video conferencing to
name a few of its facilities.
NB:
Grantley Adams International Airport was once a destination for The
British Airways Concorde during the busier United Kingdom-Barbados
winter holiday season taking approximately 4 hours to travel
to Barbados from London!! The British Airways Concorde has
since retired and the airport in Barbados has now become home to one of
these Concordes. This plane is on display in the Concorde Museum just
east of the Barbados airport.
