The Royal Westmoreland Golf Club Barbados lies in the heart of the Royal Westmoreland Golf Resort and Private, Gated Villa Community in the parish of St. James. This is on the western side of the island, close to Mount Standfast, the renowned town of Holetown and the prestigious Platinum Coast.
The Royal Westmoreland is one of the most notable private luxury villa communities on the island of Barbados. This unique community blends the secluded privacy of elegant villa home accommodations with the amenities of a 5 star Caribbean resort.
This attracts the rich and famous from all over the world who are both villa owners and renters here.
The golf course itself was designed by the well-known golf architect Robert Trent Jones Jnr. and was opened in 1994.
This spectacular Barbados golf course lies within the Royal Westmoreland estates and covers 7,045 yards. It is an 18 hole Championship golf course with a par of 72.
The architect has ensured that there is plenty of open, green space and challenging holes around the entire golf course, with plenty of bunkers to navigate.
As the course sits approximately 200 to 300 feet above sea level, every hole offers breathtaking views of the Caribbean Sea and there are lines of lush trees dotted all the way through the course.
Golf Digest magazine has given this golf course a 4 1/2 star rating and ranked it as The No.1 golf course in Barbados, while Golf Week rates it at as The Top Caribbean Golf Course.
Former respected professional golfer and Masters Champion Ian Woosnam is even quoted as saying that "The Par 3s at Royal Westmoreland are some of the best he has played anywhere in the world".
The Golf Holes
The front nine holes of the Royal Westmoreland Golf Club Barbados are known as the Quarry Nine, with the first five holes playing towards the Caribbean Sea offering spectacular ocean views.
A loved challenge is the 3rd hole, known as "Monkey's Table". This is a short Redan hole measuring 171-yards and is a Par 3. It features an elevated tee block that faces the ocean, with an elevated green that sits atop a cliff's edge.
However, it gets its name from the island's infamous monkeys that frequently come to watch you take on the challenge.
The 6th hole is one of 5 holes that makes use of a disused coral stone quarry to test players' skills even further. This golf hole is named "Hermit Hole" after an old man was found living in an abandoned cement mixer during the construction of the course.
From the tee of this golf hole you will need to clear a ravine which then leads to a tricky approach shot between high coral stone walls! Once you reach the green you will notice that it is beautifully surrounded by high rock faces.
The back nine holes are referred too as the Ridge Nine, starting off with the the 9th hole, a dogleg, Par 4 with a tee sitting high atop a ridge.
Golfers will find that the 12th hole, a 198-yard Par 3, has a very tight green making it even tougher for those with very low handicaps.
The 13th hole is a long one, measuring 600-yards. However with the assistance of the wind and being downhill allows the green to be reached in two shots.
There is also due to be the addition of a second 18 hole golf course at Royal Westmoreland in the near future as part of a USD $500 million investment.
This additional course will be designed by the brother of the original architect, Rees Jones, making The Royal Westmoreland the only place in the world to have two championship golf courses side-by-side that have been designed by two brothers.
This will also make The Royal Westmoreland the largest and best Caribbean golf resort.
